I had a similar problem after adjusting my valves. I colud hear the sound through the outlet of my muffler (which makes me think it is coming from the exhaust valves) and if I listened carefully by the head, which would go away after my engine reached operating temperature. I spent several hours taking the bike apart again and re-checking the clearance. I also checked that the engine was really at top dead center. I also tried adjusting the decompression cable which is also suposed to be chacked after 4000k, this may have had a slight effect on the sound... After fittling with this, the sound stopped. About 500 mi later I noticed the sound again. I brought the bike to a mechanic and I couldn't get the bike to make the tapping nois and he said he would have to hear it to tell me what the sound was. So I told him how I went about adjusting the vaeles, and he didn't see anything wrong with what I had done. I really wish I could figure out what the sound is.
